Occasionally I happen to cross paths with individuals that for some reason, feel the need to be self deprecating. I get the humility thing, but there is a point when it's taken just a tad too far. I don't know if it's because society has placed a label on those individuals, or they just cede this affliction as insurmountable, but it needs to stop. I'm referring to when one tells me they just aren't smart.
Now wisdom isn't reserved for the wise! It's freely available to anyone who can read or hear. It's not a dark secret kept away from John Q Public, locked away in secret vaults, reserved for only those who are worthy. It merely requires the inquisitiveness to want to know more. All that's required is the ability to discern if the input is coming from a credible source, and that leaves clues. Success in the particular field of discussion is one that can be relied upon as a marker of credibility. If something doesn't ring true about what your hearing, seek multiple sources that you deem credible.
When you encounter one of these people who declare ignorance, gently remind them that God doesn't make any junk. With that in mind, and the affirmation that we are made in His image, there is no place for the belief that they can't achieve any level of wisdom that they seek. It merely requires an effort. An effort that the Bible reminds us is our duty in Matthew 25:14-30.
God Bless!
