I've often wondered how some people form their opinions, I mean, you have to admit they are pretty diverse! So what guides them in the direction they choose to take? After an extensive study, here's my take.
People view everything through a pre-disposed filter. For instance, I've defined in my mind that Vice President Joe Biden is an individual who misquotes statistics to benefit his point, and basically everything that flows from his mouth isn't true. Therefore I don't accept a word he says as true and I fact check every statement he speaks. Where did I acquire this prism of bias? He earned it from past action.
Tea party supporters view all liberals as a threat to our Constitution and the sovereignty of our country. Liberals view every conservative as cement heads who can only say no, and have no tolerance for progressive thinking. Immigration reform advocates see those who oppose them as race biased bigots. Gay rights activists look upon those who oppose them as homophobes, and bigots. Your personal filter is in placed by the stereotypes that exist in your mind.
So where do those stereotypes from? Basically, they are creations of your environment. Your family, friends, religious beliefs, educators, and mentors nudge you toward what you believe. So if we are victims of our environment, wouldn't it be prudent to choose our associations carefully? If an educator or mentor draws your admiration, is it because she or she has great family values, and is a upstanding member of the community grounded in faith and morality, or is it because a peer told you they were cool? Not only do these seemingly unimportant decisions define your filter on life, the eventually define you and your level of success.
This should be a cause for reflection!
God Bless!
