Apparently the need to write needless legislation in Washington is some kind of highly contagious incurable infection. Congressman Peter King, a New York Republican, has announced his plans to bring to the floor, legislation to ban the carrying of a weapon within 1000 feet of a public appearance of a federal legislator. I guess even the best of us lose focus, and drift from our principles when confronted with adversity.
Here's my point...
It is already illegal to carry a concealed weapon within 1000 feet of anybody unless you have a permit. We don't need additional gun laws to reconfirm what's already in place!
Those who have a carry permit are required to be trained, and have been extensively background checked, ergo, they aren't psychologically disturbed. Has there ever been an incident of random violence by someone licensed to carry? I believe there hasn't, and in fact had there been someone present in Arizona during the most recent shootings with a concealed weapon, my guess is it would have ended much differently. I can envision less than three shot fired before a citizen licensed to carry would have responded, cutting down on the loss of life and needless injuries. The expense of a circus trial likely would have been avoided as well if the defender of the innocent aim was true.
Now, am I advocating shootouts at the OK Corral? Hardly, just a quick reaction by a responsible citizen to protect those who cannot protect themselves. People carry weapons for self defense because policemen are too heavy, and when a officer is just minutes away, incidents like this happen in seconds.
So I'm asking Congressman King to reconsider his knee jerk reaction to an ugly situation. The law he seeks already exists, and to hamper those who might have diffused the situation is just plain crazy. Disarming those responsible citizens demotes them to sheep, following the herd to slaughter. Use the existing laws to achieve your goal, and let's not put anymore restrictions on our freedoms.
God Bless!
Capt. Bill
PS. I sent him these thoughts via e-mail, I suggest anyone who feels the same respond in kind.
