America has had it's socialist experiment, way back in the 1970's. Some weren't born yet, and some have just plain forgotten the gasoline rationing inspired by our government. It's a historical example of how badly a socialistic premise failed here in a free, capitalistic country.
Threatened with a shortage in supply of petroleum, the United States government decided to step in and level the playing field for it's citizens. The rationing limited supply to each gas station and to every customer. They fixed the price and disregarded supply and demand principles. Everyone who was willing to rise at 4 am and wait in endless lines, was entitled to five gallons of gasoline, unless you could prove you were a policeman, fireman, or EMT. Then your portion was raised to ten gallons. You also had to show the gas attendant your tank was below half to be eligible for the precious liquid.
The resulting fist fights, black market gas sales, and exceptions for people who "knew someone," shows how willing Americans were to accept Socialism. Can you imagine how this will effect our nation if there is a shortage in the new government controlled healthcare system? The test market for Socialism was just gasoline, not a life and death issue.
This is why Socialism has failed in every instance it was applied. People yearn to have the freedom to earn and acquire whatever they desire. Leveling the playing field lowers the standard of living for everyone, penalizing production and exceptionalism. This promotes illegal activity, black markets and smuggling, because like it or not, if there is a demand, a good capitalist will try to fill it and make a profit. It's human nature to want more for you and yours..........
God Bless!
